The Great Storm
The big storm we had in the middle of October was very impressive. Visibility were sometime below 10 m. Perfect whiteout
conditions - don't get lost. It took us quite some time to get out to our lab, which is about half a mile form the station.
Here are some records we tight during the storm.
**RECORDS**(October 13th)
The peak wind speed of 40 kts/46 mph breaks the previous daily record wind speed of 36
kts/41 mph set in 1990.
The average daily wind speed of 27.2 kts/31.4 mph breaks the previous highest average
daily wind speed of 22.2 kts/25.6 mph set in 1962.
**RECORDS**(October 14th)
The maximum temperature of -35.6 C/-32.1 F broke the previous daily record high of -36.7
C/-34.1 F set in 1972.
The average wind speed of 28.9 kts/33.3 mph broke the previous daily record high average
of 21.0 kts/24.2 mph set in 1990.
The peak wind speed of 42 kts/48 mph broke the previous daily peak wind speed record of
31 kts/36 mph set in 2000.
The peak wind speed of 42 kts/48 mph ties the previous monthly peak wind speed record set
in 1968.
