Sundogs

On February 13th and 14th we had some nice halo displays. Halos, arcs or spots of light in the sky, are caused by the play of sunlight on ice crystals in the atmosphere.

These two types of ice crystals are responsible for the halo displays. Generally the plate crystals fall face down like leaves. On the other hand, column crystals drift downwards with their long axes nearly horizontal.
Regardless of their overall proportions, all the crystals have identical interfacial angles. It is this constancy which gives regular and predictable halos.

Les Cowley and Michael Schroeder provide a halo simulation program on their excellent halo webpage. The following simulation of the halo display on Feb. 14th is done with their program.
